Best Reading Program for Kids – A helpful and effective resource!

A strong reading ability is one of the most important factors for academic success, because children who read well tend to have an increased desire to participate in school.  I often make analogies between sports and education.  In order to be an elite gymnast, or an elite athlete in any sport, you must have good technique or basics.  The same is true with your education.  The best reading program for kids will teach effective techniques for these five essential skills.

ONE – The best reading program for kids teach PHONEMIC AWARENESS

Phonemic awareness is the understanding that the individual speech sounds, (phonemes) have unique differences and blend together to form words.

Reading Horizons teaches this essential skill through the use of the Slide. Slides are the beginning sounds that occur by moving from left to right when bigrams or trigrams are combined. Slides encourage blending sounds as a preliminary step to building words and as a support for fluency.

Students then add ending sounds to build real words and practice identifying and manipulating the individual phonemes in words.

Phonemic awareness is a foundational skill for reading readiness. With phonemic awareness solidly in place, students are ready to begin connecting sounds.

TWO – The best reading program for kids teach PHONICS

Phonics is an instructional method that teaches the relationships between sounds and letters.  Reading Horizons has an incredible method for teaching phonics.  Once children understand the basics of Reading Horizon’s phonics program, they are able to sound out unfamiliar words.  The video below shows how this process works & why Reading Horizons is so very successful.

Reading Horizons offers a step-by-step approach, which what makes it the best reading program for kids!

THREE – The best reading program for kids teach READING FLUENCY

Reading fluency encompasses the speed or rate of reading, as well as the ability to read materials with expression.  Reading Fluency is the ability to read grade level passages rapidly, smoothly, and automatically with little conscious attention to the mechanics of reading.

Reading Horizon develops reading fluency with a vast library of reading material.  The books within this library are leveled, so that your child is reading material at his or her individual ability.  Only words that have been pre-taught will appear in these passages.  Your child can listen to the narrator read.  He or she can even record themselves and listen to their own reading fluency.

FOUR – The best reading program for kids teach VOCABULARY

There are only about 10,000 different words that make up 96% of spoken language.  However, about 1-million different words make up popular contemporary print in newspapers, magazines, and literature. Vocabulary development is an important aspect of reading comprehension.

Research shows that the average fifth grade students who reads 60 minutes a day adds around 4,000,000 words to their vocabulary every year.

Reading Horizon introduces vocabulary with an illustration and the definition of the new word.  Next, the word is use within the context of a sentence to help solidify the meaning of the new word.  And finally words are practiced again and again until your child becomes familiar with the new vocabulary word.

Vocabulary is also reviewed during the read aloud.  Your child can hear the new vocabulary words he or she has learned within the context of the story.  This is one of the best-known ways to expose, teach, and solidify the meaning of words that are beyond your child’s lexicon (working knowledge of words).

FIVE – The best reading program for kids teach READING COMPREHENSION

Reading Horizons develops reading comprehension with a vast library of both fiction and nonfiction books.  Each book is leveled, so children are reading material that is at their individual ability level.  Once your child has completed a reading passage, he or she can answer questions about the text.  Once again, your child can have the narrator read the passage back to them as a read aloud.   During the read aloud your child’s comprehension is strengthened, because he or she is able to focus on the storyline and add details and imagery by visualizing the story.

Reading Horizons Explained by an Expert!

How does Reading Horizons Support Standardized Testing?

Standardized testing has gotten significantly more difficult over the years.  Years ago, children had to read a passage and answer a number of “multiple guess” questions.  I call them “multiple guess”, because a child who did not know the answer could guess between answers; A, B, C, or D and have a 25% chance of being correct.

Below is are just a few sample questions from the 4th grade ELA (English Language Arts) Smarter Balance Test, (the latest national standardized test for students in the US).

  • Children need to answer multiple choice questions that have more than 1 correct answer.

  • Children have to support their answer by using details from the text (passage).

  • Children must understand the meaning of vocabulary words.

  • Children must use context clues to infer the correct answer to questions about the text (passage).

In order to be successful, a student must be able to decode the words, understand a variety of vocabulary, and comprehend the passage.  Children must be able to answer multiple choice questions that have more than 1 correct answer, support their answer by using details from the text, understand the meaning of vocabulary words, and use context clues to infer the correct answer to questions about the text (passage).

The days of “Multiple Guess” questions are gone!  Today’s student must be able to applied the information from the passage in order to answer the questions above.  In the question above, students must choose the two details that best support the inference.  I don’t know about you, but when I was in fourth grade, I had no idea what the word inference meant, which makes answering the question difficult to say the least.  Therefore, today’s student must understand have a much greater lexicon (working knowledge of vocabulary words).

That is just the first part of this question.  Today’s student must also be able to write answer with supporting details from the passage.  In the question above, today’s students must describe a lesson that the main character learned.

As a teacher, I am constantly working to develop this skill, which I call “Justifying Your Reasoning”.  In order to be able to justify their reasoning, students must first be able to read and comprehend the passage.  If your child is struggling in reading, the Smarter Balance Test can be a daunting prospect.

If a child is below standards, they can quickly become overwhelmed!  Children who begin to feel overwhelmed need help – The Quicker the Better!

If your child has a learning disability like dyslexia, Reading Horizons has a fantastic program.  Reading Horizon utilizes the Orton-Gillingham Approach.  Children struggling with dyslexia are often creative problem solvers.  This is an asset that can be use to help support them and build their self-esteem.  Children struggling from dyslexia typically require more time sorting, recognizing, and organizing the parts of language than other children.  The Orton-Gillingham Approach that Reading Horizons uses has proven itself as an effective strategy that teaches children to build new brain connections which allow them to make sense of the English language.
