Educational Strategies

3 Simple Steps For Adding & Subtracting Large Numbers

These lessons are designed to offer math help online for children who struggle with addition & subtraction.  According to educational standards, by the time children leave second grade they should be able to add and subtract three digit numbers fluently.  In order to do this, children must know all their addition and subtraction facts from 1 to 20 automatically.  In other words, they should automatically know the following without having to think about the answer:

  • 7+9 = 16
  • 17-9 = 8
  • 6+8 = 15
  • 19-5 = 14
  • 12+7 =19

I have another post entitled, Math help websites for Parents, that demonstrates how to develop this skill.

But what if you  do not know all your facts?

I teach 6th grade.  Every year, I get a handful of students who don’t know their basic number sense for addition and subtraction. Other students get confused when borrowing during subtraction.  Because adding and subtracting is an essential building block for all mathematics, I needed to create a strategy that my students could use until they develop an understanding of basic number sense for addition and subtraction.  That is why I wrote this post entitled, Math Help Online: 3 Simple Steps For Adding & Subtracting Large Numbers

This Math Help Website is Designed so that ANYONE can succeed when Adding or Subtracting Large Numbers!
All Problems have Math Video Tutorials!
Cyclical Learning Approach

I have incorporated a cyclical learning approach with math tutorial videos.  Each educational concept is introduced, then reinforced, then revisited again and again to ensure success.  The 1st step is taught in Lesson 1.  It focuses developing strategies for adding and subtracting 3-digit numbers.  Once proficient, your child can move to the 2nd step, which is taught in Lesson 2.  This step focuses on strengthening the strategies taught in lesson 1, and incorporating those strategies into adding and subtracting 4-digit numbers.  The final step is taught in Lesson 3.  This lesson solidifies these strategies while adding and subtracting numbers with decimals.

I have scaffold these problems:
    1. The first problem is a Watch ME.
Students should read the problem and then click on the video to watch how the problem is solved.
Students should copy the entire problem into their notebook.
    2. The second problem is a WORK WITH ME.
Students should read the problem then gather all their materials, so that they can do the problem with me.
Students should play the math tutorial video and pause it when told.
Finally, Students should copy the problem down on their own paper, and solve it with me.
When the math tutorial video is complete, students should review the problem with their teacher or parent.
    3. All the following problems are ON YOUR OWN.
Students should solve the problems just as they did in the first two.
Once you they completed the problem, they should watch the math tutorial video.
Students should keep their paper with them while they watch the video.
If they made a mistake, they should pause the math tutorial video and fix their mistake.
That’s the fastest way to learn!

Book 1

I also sell these lessons without Advertisements on a website called, TeachersPayTeachers.  Each lesson is broken into a separate book.  The series is entitled, Trouble A Com’n.  If you’re interested in purchasing the books with NO Advertising, I have a link below this first problem.

Need Help with Multiplication or Division?

I have a series on multiplication and another series on division that are specifically designed for children who do not have all of their multiplication facts memorized.   These series are designed in a similar manner to this book, where each and every problem is linked to a video tutorial.

How about getting a concrete understanding of fractions?

I have a series on illustrating fractions that is specifically designed to build a concrete understanding of this complex concept.  Children who understand fractions at a deeper level are more likely to have a successful educational career .   The series is designed in a similar manner to this book, where each and every problem is linked to a video tutorial.  Here is a link to my series on Fractions.

  1. Multiplying with decimals is really easy, thanks to these books. I had not passed a multiplication exam, but these books really help me pass, and now I am one of the fastest learners in my grade.

  2. Thanks for this strategy. I used the dot method on my homework today, and it really helped.
    Thanks again. This is awesome!

  3. I think the dot method is helpful because if your having trouble adding or subtracting, you can just use the dot method to figure it out. The answer will be more clear, you aren’t just seeing it but counting outloud.

  4. I really like the dot method. It can help people if they are having a hard time with adding or subtracting.
